The province of Ontario has made a considerable investment of $9.5 million over a three-year period towards providing farmers with the technology they need to enhance their soil health, increase productivity and ultimately their profitability.
This investment, detailed in the 2023 Budget: Building a Strong Ontario, will primarily go towards improving the mapping of soil data, as well as soil evaluation and monitoring. These data-driven maps serve as the basis for decision-making, and by empowering farmers to harness the potential of cutting-edge technology, they can ensure their long-term viability and global competitiveness.
The Honorable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, expressed her excitement for this project, stating that “this funding will allow farmers, researchers, and others to access critical data to help understand, and adapt to meet the needs of soil management and health protocols provincewide.” She added that this initiative builds on actions outlined in the Grow Ontario Strategy, which focuses on supporting the resiliency and growth of the food supply sector while providing useful insights to better understand the needs and potential of agriculture and agri-food across the province.
This ambitious investment by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) aims to update the province’s soil maps and information by undertaking Soil Resource Inventory (SRI) work. Furthermore, the government will also develop the Ontario Agricultural Soil Information System (OASIS), which will provide farmers with vital soil data management and analysis capabilities. This information will help farmers make more informed decisions that can positively impact their operations, ensuring that their land remains fertile for years to come.
